Remedial Classes 2010
Similar to the efforts of 2009, Remedial Classes were held for children who had moved from sub-standard schools to standard schools in 2009.
Children from Class 3 to Class 8 were identified on the basis of their academic results. It was decided that 91 students, who had managed to obtain only C or below grades, would be asked to attend Remedial Classes in English and Maths.
Mohalla-wise breakdown of the 91 students was as follows;
Saleh Mohalla | 27 |
Essa Mohalla | 13 |
Ibrahim Mohalla | 14 |
Adam Mohalla | 37 |
Proficiency tests were held in English and Maths on the basis of which the children were divided into 10 groups. Saifiyah Girls School was the selected venue and they also provided the teachers for this undertaking.
A lot of emphasis was placed on maintaining the best possible teacher to student ratio. The Vice Principal of SGS, two co-ordinators plus 11 teachers with 6 helpers comprised the teaching staff.
Classes commenced from the 3rd of June. One session of Maths and English, approx 1.5 hours each, was held everyday, with refreshment provided to the students in between. Mohalla representatives were present every day at SGS to assist in administration. 2nd of July was the last day.
Unfortunately, a number of students (12) did not take advantage of this opportunity, failing to attend even a single class. Mohalla representatives pursued them aggressively but to no avail. It is indeed a matter of great disappointment for us that some children and particularly their parents fail to understand the importance of good education. Amongst those that attended attendance was around the 80 to 85% mark.
As a reward to those who attended the classes regularly, the boys and the girls were taken to Al-Jamea-Tus-Saifiyah’s swimming pool on the 5th and 6th of July respectively.
Progress reports have been compiled by SGS on each and every student. These have been passed to the respective Mohalla. Mohalla representatives will hold one on one meeting’s with the parents of these children in order to counsel them. It is our intention to continuously monitor the activities of these children, and we expect that these summer classes will help them improve their results next year. Children who attended regularly and those performed well will be rewarded.
Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to the management and the teachers of SGS who contributed a lot of time and effort in making these Remedial Classes possible.
